Since CrashPlan's announcement that it is discontinuing its consumer product (CrashPlan Home) there has been a lot of interest in how SpiderOak ONE compares to CrashPlan. Here are a few high points; for more specific questions about SpiderOak ONE's features please contact our support team.
1. Encryption Specifications
CrashPlan Home used 128-bit encryption for local backups, but the stronger, more modern encryption is reserved for their Business and Enterprise editions.
SpiderOak ONE utilizes a No Knowledge encryption standard to ensure your data is protected before leaving your device, in transit, and while at rest on our servers. Your Password is hashed with multi-round and salted PBKDF2. PBKDF2 uses SHA-256 with over 16000 rounds, and a 32 byte salt of random data.
Your keys, which are unlocked with your password, are created with AES-256 in CFB mode and HMAC-SHA-256. For more information on SpiderOak ONE's encryption please see the No Knowledge page.
2. Storage Options
One major difference between CrashPlan Home and SpiderOak ONE is storage options. While SpiderOak ONE works well with local backup solutions such as rsync, Apple Time Machine, or Carbon Copy Cloner, it does not provide a mechanism for keeping a local backup from within the SpiderOak ONE app.
All data backed up with SpiderOak ONE is stored in our state of the art server facility. We own and operate our own servers, and never store your data with a third party such as AWS or Microsoft Azure. For more information on our server facility's specifications, please see this page.
3. Supported Operating Systems
Like CrashPlan, SpiderOak ONE offers applications for Windows, macOS, and various Linux distributions.
4. Backup Options
CrashPlan offered robust options for backup controls. SpiderOak ONE offers similarly granular control of what data you can back up. After installing SpiderOak ONE a folder called the SpiderOak Hive will be created on your computer. Any files placed in this folder will be automatically backed up. Beyond the Hive folder, you can select any data on your device in the Backup tab of the ONE application. You have full control of what gets backed up, and there is no need to change your folder structure to do so.
SpiderOak ONE places no restrictions on the number of devices that can be associated with an account. The sole restriction is total storage size, which is determined by which subscription plan you choose to purchase. In addition, ONE gives you the ability to create custom syncs so that data can be synchronized between any devices within your account.
