Syndication is the process that runs when you are adding additional new devices to your SpiderOak ONE, Groups, or Enterprise account, or reinstalling an existing device. This process downloads all the necessary account information (but not any of your files) to your computer so that your new device can see what information exists on your other devices and communicate with them.
More specifically, what syndication downloads is metadata related to the devices and files already in your account, so that your files can quickly displayed in the Manage tab of the application. The amount of time it takes is proportionate to the number of devices and files you have in your account. For a new account with no prior devices, it should only take a moment. For unusually large accounts with terabytes of data stored, it could take over 24 hours.
Syndication has multiple steps. You don't normally need to concern yourself with them, but if there is a problem (more on that below) then do note what step of syndication is presenting the problem to help us troubleshoot the matter for you.
As stated, syndication does not download your files. Do keep in mind that if you have any files in the Hive folder on other computers, then as soon as syndication completes then SpiderOak will download those (and only those) files. This is by design, because the purpose of the Hive folder is to synchronize its contents with all your computers.
The most common reasons for syndication trouble are:
- Impatience. As noted, syndication can take a long time, so allow the application time to finish the process. You may of course continue to use your computer in the meantime.
- Local connection issues.
- An account that is not in good standing. Confirm that your account is open and not overdue.
If you have a syndication problem and the above list does not help you resolve it, press "submit a request" above and let us know about the matter. Be sure to provide the email address associated with your account, the SpiderOak device name in question (if it is an existing device), on which step of syndication you have trouble and what exactly the trouble is, and what you have already tried.
